About Sunday School…

Welcome to another year of IABAT Sunday Islamic School. We would like to go over some housekeeping items and inform you of a few changes. Please read carefully.

SCHEDULE

We will have school from 10-12 on Sundays. Qur’an will be held within the first hour; Islamic Studies the second hour. There will be no lunch. It is critical that you drop off and pick up your child promptly so that s/he may gain as much as possible from the experience. Late arrivals are disruptive to class, so please be prompt. Just as well, we ask that you respect the personal schedules of our volunteers and arrive on time for pickup at noon. Thank you.

ADULT PARTICIPATION AND EDUCATION

This year we are offering an Adult Qur’an class. In this class, Dr. Mehdi Hazari will discuss various topics of the Qur’an and examine the ways in which the Qur’an sheds light upon itself. Br. Mehdi will do this by connecting and cross-referencing parts of the Qur’an as they relate to a given topic. This class will take place from 10-11. This class has been incredibly popular at the 110 Center – don’t miss out!

In addition, we are hoping to have YOU come in to participate in our school by teaching a class. We have one slot/month designated for a “parent-teacher”. For example, if you have a particular topic you wish to speak on, please sign up with Sr. Amirah (amyclairenelsonATgmail.com). Topics might include: Why You Became Muslim; The History of Muslims in America; The Ahkaam of Wudhu; Islam and Health; Famous Muslim Inventors, etc.

QUR’AN

This year we will be using “word banks” to help introduce the children to Qur’anic vocabulary. Each week, your child’s teacher will go over a set of words (with meaning), as well as a Name(s) of Allah (swt) as it appears in each sura. We will begin with Al-Fatiha, then move on to An-Nas, and continue through 30th Juz. The children will practice recitation, reading, and meaning. Please contact Sr. Chahnaz Kbaisi-Hazari for details.

ISLAMIC STUDIES

This year’s curriculum will center around the Islamic calendar. We will study the lives of the Prophets and A’imma as their births, deaths, and critical historical events coinicide with the school calendar. We will also fill in with the integrated “A to Z” curriculum found on the website, QFatima.com. Islamic Studies will be divided into three levels.

STUDENT PRESENTATIONS

For events at IABAT that coincide with auspicious occasions, we will invite the youth to present well-rehearsed, well-written speeches and PowerPoints under the guidance of Br. Mehdi. While the children did an excellent job with their presentations last year, we feel that having the youth present in front of the entire community, will bring their efforts to a new level, and hopefully prepare them for such presentations outside of the Islamic Center context. We will have a limit of one or two presentations per event. Sign up with Sr. Amirah.

FIELD TRIPS

This year we are hoping to take 2 to 3 field trips as a school. We are looking into a few possibilities, but if you have any suggestions, please direct them to our field trip coordinators: Sr. Azita Razai & Sr. Erum Agha.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

IABAT is committed to providing food to the homeless in the parking lot of Urban Ministries, every fourth Friday at four. If you would like to help out, plan to arrive at Urban Ministries in downtown Durham a few minutes before 4. If you want to help prepare food and/or serve, please contact Br. Hayder Gallaghan (gallaghan1@gmail.com).

DRESS CODE

All adults and youth, male and female, must observe hijab. Come in clean, simple, modest clothing.
